The Enhanced View Plugin

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR WORDPRESS 2.0 USERS: This plugin doesn’t work under WordPress 2.0. I honestly do not know that it ever will, but I won’t say “never.” As you can tell, I haven’t upgraded to 2.0 myself. When and if that happens and I reach the same point of frustration with the limitations of the post viewing interface in that version, I may have the impetus to update it. Sorry for any inconvenience.

UPDATE 10/20/05: Reduced memory usage so people with PHP memory limits and large numbers of categories will hopefully work.

New functionality At long last, it’s finally ready for an initial release. Announcing the Enhanced Views plugin for WordPress. This plugin replaces the original Posts functionality in the WordPress administration interface with a new version that include increased functionality, including:

Installation

Note that this plugin requires WordPress version 1.5 Strayhorn or any of the 1.5.1 nightlies. Do not install this plugin on a 1.3 beta or earlier release. Installing the plugin couldn’t be easier. Choose from the following methods:

Usage

Using the plugin is even easier. There’s nothing special to do, just visit your standard ‘Manage’ page in the WordPress administration interface. It should look a bit different but it works pretty much the same as you’re used to. If you have many posts on your blog, you’ll see an area with Pages: followed by links of page numbers. Click on a page number link to immediately jump to that page of comments. Want to see more or fewer posts per page? Change the number of posts to display on each page by typing a number into the ‘Show:’ input box and either click on the ‘Show:’ button or press return after entering the number.

Browsing works a little differently than you’re used to. Consider all of the fields as active at the same time. Want to search for all entries that contain the word “WordPress” posted into the “Blogging” category in March of 2004 and written by “Admin”? Simply select each of those — pressing the button next to each field as you select them — and you’ll have no trouble narrowing down your search.

You can sort posts by date, title, and author and you can select descending and ascending order. Simply click on the link at the top of the column in order to select the search order. Please note that those of you running Ryan Boren’s “Custom Posts Per Page” plugin will be unable to switch from ascending to descending order. I’m working on a way around this but have no workaround at this time.

Removal

Removal is rather straightforward as well. You can either deactivate the plugin or remove the plugin file entirely. No core WordPress files are touched, ever.
