Sony can’t seem to catch a break — at least domestically, of course they’re burning up Japan. Ignoring the simply hilarious discovery of their hideous “guerrilla ad campaign”, now it looks like the PS3 just ain’t so great at playing those PS2 titles. Oh, it’ll play them. It’ll play all of them. But, it’ll look like shit when it does. The image to the right is a screenshot from the linked video, and you’re welcome to zoom in on it by clicking.
This is thrown in even starker contrast when you factor in the Xbox 360’s upscaling support for backwards compatible games. One of Sony’s main competitors actually takes pains to make their new console display previous generation games better on the new console and Sony can’t even get parity with the old console. That’s rough.
If there’s one thing that the Xbox 360 does well — and, honestly, there are many — it’s scaling. Frankly, once you set your resolution in the dashboard you forget about it. Everything that ever comes out of the box — even DVD and HD-DVD content where not encumbered by ridiculous DRM mandates — will be scaled and scaled well to whatever resolution you specify. Sony’s box just can’t do that apparently.
For a company that touted that “the next generation doesn’t start until we say it does,” they sure seem to be doing everything possible to flub it.
