“Now choose one. . .”

Sony is sending out surveys to determine what is important to gamers about online gaming. That’s great, do a focus group and all that dandy stuff. Only problem is if you, as the “young upstart” in a particular field — as in this case Sony must be considered given the experience Microsoft has with Xbox Live 1.0 and the well thought out successor for the next generation Xbox Live 2.0 service on the Xbox 360 — and you’ve got an incumbent you’re battling against, you’d better be superior to the incumbent in some way. Therefore, asking which of these neato features that already exist in the incumbent’s product are important to you is roughly akin to a Ferrari competitor sending out a questionnaire to prospective buyers that says:

What do you look for in a sports car? (Please choose one.)

  • Spirited acceleration
  • Aggressive handling
  • Gorgeous styling
  • Luxurious interior
  • Competitive pricing
