GuitarPortGuitarPort

Talk about poor impulse control, I am so tempted to get a GuitarPort.

I’ve owned a guitarport for aquite awhile, so maybe I can shed some light on it for you.

It has a decent selection of tones available by default but the real gems you will either make yourself or get out of the Tone Locker.

Recording with it is rather simple using the ASIO drivers, not quite as clean as what I would like, but pretty nice for $99.

One of the downsides, for me, is that I have to either use headphones or run a patch cable from the GP to my computer. Although recently I’ve been running a patch cable into the CD input of my Fender frontman 15R practice amp. Works pretty nice so far.

Another downside is that sometimes it will horribly crash, making an amazing loud static-like sound and won’t work correctly until I reboot. A pretty major inconvenience when you’re jamming and a huge inconvenience during a particulary good take when you’re recording. I guess, I never actually have good takes.

Wow, thanks for those impressions. That’s exactly the kind of information I’ve been looking for.

Primarily I’m looking for something to do the things it does and provide that spark of excitement that I need to really get back into the guitar. You know, aside from spending a grand on a Mesa Boogie Triaxis.

What I would like to do, but can’t afford to, is get a PodXT. You get the computer based benefits of the GuitarPort (they use the same software) but you aren’t tied to the computer. A friend of mine has one, it’s freaking awesome.

Well, I couldn’t spring for the PodXT — and, to be honest, I don’t even know that I really need it anymore as I completely lack an amplifier or other paraphernalia at this point — but I did put a GuitarPort with RiffTracker on order today from Amazon. We’ll see how it goes!

    Impulse control… loses!

After you’ve had some time to evaluate the RiffTracker software, let me know how you like the recording features and the InstantDrummer. These are the two (main) features that aren’t in the original GuitartPort software.

The whole “start recording from the guitar” feature interests me too.

So, if you don’t mind, let me know if you think it would be worth the $99 upgrade for these two features alone. Something tells me it won’t be, considering the freeware out there (Audacity) that could emulate both features, but you never know.
