It’s Gravatars!

Javahead pointed Gravatars out to me and I dig them, though the name just… chafes somehow. Essentially, these are avatars that are displayed next to comments you make on any Gravatar-enabled blog or website. Fluff? Certainly. But who cares?

John has a lovely design and ideal Gravatar usage given my site design. I’ve since gratefully “borrowed” from his design — including his default Gravatar image until I can craft a more appropriate one tonight in Photoshop — in order to get up and running with something attractive. Of course, my Gravatar hasn’t been “approved” yet, so I get the default as well. You should recognize mine pretty easily.

Just for fun, created a globally recognized avatar. Pointer came from coldforged.org. Thanks -7

    Hey.. you nicked my icon!

There! No more stolen icon :) . Thanks for the awesome idea, though. Having the background there and the border simply set it off perfectly.

No, I’m not really one of those guys.

You know I’m joshing you. To be honest I find Perl completely incomprehensible, hence my “disdain.” We mock what we don’t understand ;) . I simply love PHP because it’s almost totally interchangeable with what I’m used to: C and C++.

I’m a big fan of “use what works best for you,” so WordPress — and by extension, PHP — works better for me than MT — of course, by extension, Perl. It doesn’t hurt that the feature set in WP suits my taste better than MT too.

No, I’m not really one of those guys. If it’s me making the choice, though, then I do tend to choose Perl for anything that doesn’t get compiled (unless there’s a compelling need/reason not to). It’s my “language of first resort” – when I am thinking about how to express a solution to a problem programatically, the algorithms that appear in my head are in Perl.

Granted, those problems don’t often require the use of XWindows/Windows/MacOS APIs (no, I haven’t stooped to using Perl/TK – although I seriously considered it once), so it’s an easy choice. While I have never been a programmer for a living – which may invalidate my right to have any meaningful opinion about languages – I’d say I’ve written about 35kloc of Perl in my lifetime, mostly for system administration tools, CGI scripts, and special-purpose utilities like flat-file data mining. That may not sound like a lot, but bear in mind that I like my code like I like my women – elegant, short, and re-usable (I am 100% certain to get in trouble for that statement).

At any rate, I’ve actually been wanting to learn PHP for a while and got some of the basics down when I was customizing and tweaking my wiki, so a new weblog platform’s as good an excuse as any.

Side note – when my Gravatar is scaled down to 38×38 from 80×80, my Gravatar is basically unintelligible. I guess that means it’s time to get a higher contrast Gravatar…

(Yes, I am trying to use the word Gravatar as many times as possible simply because you said you didn’t like the word Gravatar. Yes, I am in a childish mood at the moment. Gravatar.)

  • ColdForged says:

Oh dear, you’re one of those guys. Perl causes cancer and the clap, just bear that in mind.

As an aside, our clan is really going great guns, isn’t it? :D I hope to get some Halo 2 in sometime, like tomorrow night.

  • Dan says:

Blasphemy! Perl is the swiss army knife of interpreted languages!

(Translation: What? You want me to learn somthing else?) :)

Temporarily, please believe :) . As I said, tonight I’ll get something a little more relevant to my site. I love the look of yours, though!

The latest round of anti-MT-Blacklist stuff has really got me irritated to the point that I am going to have to switch to WordPress for more robust comment moderation options, so I don’t think I’ll be implementing any new features on our weblog until that conversion happens. It seems fun enough that I’ll probably add it once we get the conversion nailed down though.

Yes, come to the dark side, Dan. Move away from the sins of old. Remember, PHP is always more fun than Perl ;) .

  • Dan says:

What the heck… I’ll test out the gravatar stuff (at least participating in the system).
