The Spring, Summer, and Fall of Our Discontent

Halo 2 comes out in 5 days. Half-Life 2 follows along roughly 2 weeks later. Doom 3 has already arrived and spread terror (or boredom depending on who you ask) among the weak. For other platforms that I don’t own and hence are dead to me I am to understand that Metal Gear Solid 3 comes out for the PS2 (with the family-friendly Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas already out) and Metroid Prime 2 is nigh on available for the GameCube.

These are all premier titles for every conceivable platform. They’re all coming out or will be out within the month. My brain has to ask “what comes next?”

Anyone even vaguely familiar with the gaming industry is aware that development times are consistently increasing for AAA titles. We will have waited 3 years for the sequel to Halo. I don’t even want to think how long people have been waiting for Half-Life 2 or Doom 3. The simple fact I’ve come to grudgingly accept is that premier titles will be distinctly lacking unless something surprisingly springs forth out of the shadows.

It will be an odd gaming time. Nothing delicious on the horizon. Everything we’ve been waiting for sitting cozily on our shelves or being played through again. Someone point me out something on which I can focus my obsession once these things are out!
