Vienna Teng

We went out with the Javaheads last night for some dinner and music. I hadn’t a clue who was performing, but I figured it would be enjoyable and give Cat a chance to get out some before the bambino gets here.

As it turns out there were two young women playing at the cafe, both singer/songwriter/pianists. The opener, a local girl is good… folksy, enthusiastic. Overall though, and I don’t mean this badly, she’s “local”. I don’t know how better to describe it. She has a good voice, not my favorite, but she has good control of it. Let’s call it an active voice for want of a better description. Her piano playing is tuneful, but brash and a bit heavy.

Vienna TengThe main act, Vienna Teng, was utterly new to me, too. Never heard of her… Javahead mentioned that she had recently been on Letterman. Okay. Let me just say that she’s a very talented girl. She’s classically trained on the piano, and it certainly shows. She has a deft, sure touch with the piano and she’s imminently capable of subtlety and nuance. Her voice is excellent and her songwriting is first rate. She was also completely comfortable on stage, conversing with the audience and sharing witty, intelligent stories between songs. A true professional, and one that I think has a tremendously bright future. What was going to be just a nice night out with friends ended up being surprisingly rewarding.

Go take a “listen”:http://pyewacket.net/audio/vienna/viennateng-gravity.mp3 somewhere, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. This coming from someone who usually doesn’t enjoy female singer/songwriter/pianists. If you have a chance to see her, take it.
